About Bobby Dukoff

Bobby Dukoff, a name synonymous with innovation in the saxophone world, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2012, at the age of 93. Born in Worcester, MA, in 1918, Bobby's journey with the saxophone began when he bought his first instrument at the age of 14. Raised in Sioux City, IA, and Mt. Vernon, NY, he honed his craft, eventually becoming a prominent saxophonist, playing with many of the iconic Big Bands of the era.

Dukoff's career as a musician is impressive in itself, as he performed with legendary names such as Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Frank Sinatra. However, his true legacy lies in his mouthpieces. Bobby’s passion for mouthpiece design started in the 1940s when an accident with his saxophone mouthpiece led him on a quest to create the perfect sound. Dissatisfied with existing options, Bobby began experimenting in his garage, crafting custom mouthpieces for himself and his fellow musicians.

Realizing that "the sound starts at the mouthpiece," Bobby’s innovative designs began gaining recognition. His first mouthpieces, introduced in 1943, were known for their superior tone, volume, and projection. His relentless pursuit of excellence and natural curiosity led him to continually improve his designs, tailoring them to match each player’s style. By the late 1940s, Dukoff mouthpieces were sought after by top musicians, and Bobby’s garage experiments had evolved into a full-fledged business.

Throughout his life, Bobby balanced his work as a mouthpiece maker with his musical career. In addition to his playing, he recorded albums, including the best-selling Sax in Silk in 1956, and worked as a sound engineer for RCA, recording artists like Charlie Parker. His expertise in sound helped him refine his mouthpiece designs even further.

By the 1970s, Bobby Dukoff had become fully immersed in the mouthpiece business, running a successful workshop in Kendall, Florida. His studio was also a hub for musical creativity, with renowned artists like Timmy Thomas and James Brown recording in his space.

Bobby's mouthpieces were more than just tools for musicians—they were an extension of their sound. Dukoff’s meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of the saxophone's mechanics made his mouthpieces a favorite among artists like Dexter Gordon, Michael Brecker, Kenny G, and many more.

In the 1990s, Bobby took on an apprentice, Nicolas Hernandez, who would later become his business partner. Together, they ensured the Dukoff legacy lived on, with Nicolas continuing the tradition of crafting the same high-quality handmade mouthpieces that Bobby had pioneered.

Bobby was married twice—first to Anita Boyer, with whom he had a daughter, Deerdra, and three grandchildren. After Anita’s passing, Bobby remarried Jeanne Cook, with whom he spent the last years of his life.

For over 60 years, Dukoff mouthpieces have shaped the sound of some of the greatest saxophonists in the world. Today, the brand remains a leader in the industry, offering musicians unparalleled precision, power, and performance. Bobby Dukoff's legacy lives on through his mouthpieces, continuing to inspire and elevate saxophonists worldwide.
